Bernoulli Evangelizes Continuous Clinical Surveillance at HIMSS19

John Zaleski featured in RT Magazine cover story on alarm management for respiratory therapists

John Zaleski, PhD, CAP, CPHIMS, Chief Analytics Officer of Bernoulli, the real-time leader in patient safety, is featured in the May/June cover story of RT Magazine, “Patient Monitoring and Alarm Fatigue.”

The article notes that alarm fatigue continues to remain a significant patient safety threat and details how clinicians can mitigate this problem.

Zaleski says that hospitals and health systems need better understanding of their current state environment, including clinical workflows, patient cohorts, and assessments in order to develop comprehensive guidelines and protocols for clinical alarm management.

As for solutions, Zaleski recommends one with integration capabilities. “Combinatorial alarms take multiple sources of information and bring it together to corroborate events. This is not simply limited to data extracted in real time from patient care devices at the point of care, but also can be drawn from ancillary sources.”

Customer Feedback Indicates Improved Outcomes

Feedback collected by KLAS from Bernoulli customers offers powerful evidence that the company’s solutions empowers clinicians to drive better outcomes, improve the patient experience, and enhance provider workflow.

Representative quotes within the report include:

Alarm Configuration. “Bernoulli has provided the greatest guidance in terms of reducing notification fatigue. Not only does their system configure to critical alarms so that we don’t have many nuisance alarms, but also Bernoulli has given us a lot of information about how we can program our equipment to ensure that we don’t have frequent nuisance alarms. That makes a big difference.”

Best Practices & Education. “Bernoulli has been very good at sharing best practices with us. Bernoulli has webinars that I send… my techs to. Bernoulli is providing education, and that is always appreciated. Bernoulli is flexible, accessible, and timely. They are very supportive. Bernoulli is always accessible for support. The product is user friendly and is a great safety adjunct, depending on the facility layout.”

Alarm Reduction & Management. Bernoulli told us how their middleware could be programmed and what we would need in order to reduce the number of nuisance alarms. About one-fourth of our alarms were nonactionable, and when we shared that with Bernoulli, they coached us in how to be more selective so that we could ensure that the nuisance alarms would go away. Their suggestions certainly worked.”

“It’s always an honor to be recognized and validated by the customers we work with,” said Janet Dillione, CEO of Bernoulli. “Bernoulli prides itself on being more of a partner than a vendor. Bernoulli Provides Medical Device Integration and Connectivity at Major Hospital Network

Completion of Implementation Results in Enhanced Quality of Care and Patient Safety at Six St. Luke’s Hospitals

Milford, CT—April 4, 2016—Bernoulli, a leader in real-time connected healthcare, announced the successful go-live of medical device integration and connectivity at Pennsylvania-based St. Luke’s University Health Network (SLUHN), a non-profit, regional, fully integrated, nationally recognized health system. The implementation took place as part of the current Epic installation for six of the health system’s hospitals.

Utilizing their proven Nuvon VEGA architecture, Bernoulli coordinated, configured and implemented medical device connectivity with the critical care and anesthesia procedure areas of six St. Luke’s hospitals. Supported departments include Gastroenterology, Catheterization Lab, Interventional Radiology, Operating Rooms, MRI department, Obstetrics, ICU, CCU and Step-Down ICU—totaling more than 300 beds.

“St. Luke’s is committed to the highest quality patient care and patient safety,” said Kimberly Husky, Director of Integration and Interoperability at SLUHN. “We were able to integrate a number of different devices across different platforms and distribute the necessary drivers through one feed from Bernoulli.”

As part of the implementation, Bernoulli deployed custom-built device drivers related to 12 device types, including GE patient monitors using both serial and network connectivity, Draeger and GE anesthesia machines, Covidien BIS monitors, Medrad MRI monitors, Edwards cardiac output monitors and Datascope Passport monitors.

For clinicians to make the best patient care decisions, hospitals must ensure that their EHRs and clinical decision systems contain meaningful and accurate data from the myriad that monitor patients. In addition to having ready access to this real-time, synchronized patient data, clinicians must also be able to access this information at all times and at any location. Bernoulli’s VEGA solution offers the lowest overall cost of ownership, with a single system management controller that does not require expensive add-ons, easy plug-and-play connectivity, the highest level of patient data security and privacy, integrated clinical mobility and positive patient association.

“Successfully implementing medical device connectivity and interoperability in all six of St. Luke’s hospitals within a tight timeframe and during a major EHR build demonstrates Bernoulli’s ability to deliver on its promise of accurate, real-time patient data, anytime, anywhere,” said Jonathan Krieger, Bernoulli Director of Project Implementation. “We see St. Luke’s as a long-term partner and are pleased that we can support them now and in the future.”
